- Discounted registration fee at the Society’s annual plenary conference and reciprocal discounts on RMA conferences, events and publications.
- Bursaries in support of musicological research.
- The opportunity to present your work and meet other postgraduate students at the annual SMI Postgraduate Students’ Conference.
- The opportunity to network socially and professionally with fellow musicologists.
Student Representation on the SMI Council
The student representative is elected by the student membership of the SMI by secret ballot, which usually coincides with the election of the SMI Council. The next election will take place in March 2009 and all interested student members are encouraged to put themselves forward for nomination. More details may be found in item 6 of the SMI Constitution and you are welcome to contact the current student representative with further queries at any time. The main function of the student representative is to represent the views of the SMI student membership at meetings of the SMI Council, and to work on behalf of the interests and expectations of all student members.
SMI Postgraduate Students’ Conference
The SMI organises an annual conference for postgraduate research students which takes place each January in a selected university in Ireland. The conference aims to provide students with a supportive and encouraging forum in which to present their work. The inaugural Postgraduate Students’ Conference took place on 19 January in University College Dublin. Professor Jan Smaczny, President of the SMI and Hamilton Harty Professor of Music at Queen’s University, Belfast, delivered the key-note address and the event also marked the launch of the SMI Music Theses Register.
The second Postgraduate Students’ Conference will take place at the Department of Music, National University of Ireland, Maynooth on Saturday, 24 January 2009. For further information about this event, contact Aisling Kenny.
