Public Musicology Podcast Interview with Patricia Flynn
What does it mean to be a musicologist in 21st-century Ireland? Karishmeh Felfeli-Crawford (of BBC Radio 3, RTE Radio 1, CBC Radio 2 and Dublin City FM fame) interviews Patricia Flynn of Dublin City University in an attempt to answer this question as part of the critically acclaimed series of coffee interviews for the cutting-edge podcast Offbeat. Drawing from her own diverse career as an Associate Professor (Dublin City University) and from her various roles in the Contemporary Music Centre, Music Generation and Glasdrum, Patricia Flynn sheds light on the more joyful aspects of musicology in its broadest sense while also commenting on the need for Irish music academia to see beyond disciplinary boundaries and institutional affiliations. The focus is firmly (though not only) on the Irish university; the conversation moves swiftly between Flynn’s past and the musical present, to contemplate the idea of (Irish) musicology and/as vocation.
