Our 20th annual postgraduate students' research conference will be held on 22-23 January 2027 at TU Dublin Conservatoire under the joint auspices of the SMI and the Irish National Committee of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance. The keynote address will be given by Professor John O'Flynn (Dublin City University). The conference will feature the presentation of the SMI's Harry White Doctoral Prize. As in previous years, the postgraduate conference will also include a Careers Forum and a dedicated session featuring prize-winners of the annual CHMHE competition for undergraduate dissertations.

The conference committee warmly invites proposals from postgraduate researchers conducting supervised research at third-level institutions across the broad fields of music, sound and dance. We welcome work representing a wide range of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, theoretical, historical, ethnographic, analytical, creative and practice-based approaches, including, but not limited to, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, traditional music and dance studies, ethnochoreology, music theory and analysis, screen music, sound studies and sonic arts, composition, music technology, music pedagogy, popular music studies, performance studies, artistic and practice research, psychology of music, music and gender, music and cultural heritage and interdisciplinary approaches to music.
All presenters are expected to uphold established principles of research integrity. Where generative AI tools have been used substantively in the research or preparation of the presentation, their use should be acknowledged transparently and appropriately. Presenters remain responsible for the accuracy, attribution and integrity of all material presented.
